Singularity presents Stage '03 Festival--an annual showcase of (primarily) new work by hot up-and-comers. Past festivals have featured work by Christopher Shinn, Joe Calarco, Jim Cartwright, Adam Rapp and Sam Forman. The 2003 Festival will present over a dozen dynamic new short works offered in a rotating repertory of six different programs. Presented April 21 - May 3 at Manhattan Theatre Source, the programs are as follows:
Program 1:
- The Administration - A comedy in three people. Sketch comedy at its smartest, from Kristen Schaal, Dan Mahoney and Ryan Harrison.
- John S. Hall - My Life on the Farm. Short spoken word pieces from the vocalist and lyricist of King Missile, best known for "Detachable Penis" and "Jesus Was Way Cool."
Program 2:
- Magnetic North - Survival of the Fittest. A bill of four pieces: The Long Arm of Science by Baxter Holland, directed by Greg Schmalbach; At the Seashore by Elizabeth Emmons, directed by Karin Bowersock; Animal Play by Josh Ben Friedman, directed by Rachel Wood; and The Kingdom by Greg Gasawski, directed by Max Williams. Magnetic North is a new company born out of Naked Angels Theater School.
Program 3:
- Fattie & Skinny Show - Live from their living room, Fattie and Skinny present Fattie & Skinny Show, written and performed by Fattie and Skinny.
- The Woodsman - Conceived and performed by Gautham Prasad, the body is used to express what is beyond words in this series of short stories told through the art of silence.
Program 4:
- Gift - It’s Sylvie’s birthday and Larry has a surprise. It has two legs, two arms, and a pair of beautiful eyes. Will it lead her to redemption or to her own destruction? Written by Mark Schultz. Directed by Daniel Talbott.
Program 5:
- The Jesus Side - Haunted by memories of molestation, Alexander is encouraged by his "therapist" to seek out the perpetrator. More than a "bad touch" bubbles to the surface when son confronts would-be father Frank. A twisted comedy about love and mass murder. Written and Directed by Ken Urban.
- How to Act Around Cops - A young man, an off-duty cop, and a video camera collide to create a captivating puzzle. Written by Logan Brown. Directed by Jon Schumacher.
Program 6:
- One Person - Ever dream of confronting your ex? Watch one man do just that... in front of an entire audience. Written by Robert Patrick. Directed by Sullivan Canaday White. Performed by Patrick Mellen.
- Kirby - A deliciously disturbing whodunit set in a lavish Long Island summer cottage in the late 1920's. Sometimes murder is 'just the thing'. Written by Ellen Shanman. Directed by Moritz Von Stuelpnagel.
- The Fall - One winter night a newish baby falls from a highish window in a whitish house on a nearish street. The next morning, he is found without a scratch. A brief investigation of the nature of magic using movement and puppetry. Written and directed by Liza Steinberg.
