Free Summer Performances Begin June 5
Obie and Bessie Award Winning Circus Amok returns for its 12th season of annual urban circuses with the premiere of Home * Land * Security. Beginning June 5th, this unusual collection of performers will offer 16 free shows in Riverside Park, Fort Greene Park, Tompkins Square Park, Coney Island, Socrates Sculpture Park, and other public spaces throughout New York City. This extravaganza promises to redefine "shock and awe" as the Circus Amok crew juggles political satire, New York history, and traditional circus slapstick. It is completely free and open to the public -- perfect for adults and children of all ages.
In Home * Land * Security, the Fratelli brothers, those jugglers extrodinaire, refuse to register with the INS. They are on the lamb and now no place is safe. Follow the Brother's exploits as they encounter high-soaring handsome flippers, the Quaker quackers, lions, tigers, and a bevy of deviant divas divulging military secrets, in the Home-iest, Free-ist, Bravest spectacle you'll see this year. This new show creatively address issues and concerns currently affecting all New Yorkers. Our city is wildly diverse -- made up of hundreds of smaller communities, each with its own set of struggles, joys, hardships, and concerns. At the same time, we are all in this together. Facing these struggles head on, hands on, and with their hearts on their sleeves, Circus Amok works tough terrain into compelling, yet entertaining art.
Circus Amok is a one-of-a-kind, gender-bending, free associating, schtick driven, star-studded circus. Directed by the unstoppable "bearded lady" Jennifer Miller, this troupe of jugglers, stilt walkers, divas, and acrobats balances danger with laughter, politics with punchlines. This year’s circus features Ashley Brockington, Michelle Matlock, Osmani Tellez, Jonathan Berger, Noelle Kalom and Fabio Tavares.
The troupe is accompanied by the blasting, percussive sounds of the 6 piece Circus Amok band, under the baton of Jenny Romaine. Playing a variety of international musical styles from klezmer to funk to folk will be: Terry Dame (composer-in-residence) Mary Feaster, Lisa Frisari, Ben Meyers, and Mona Seda.
