Axis Delivers Explosive New Work Off-Broadway
U.S.S. Frankenstein
September 25 - November 15 at Axis Theatre
Axis Company presents the Off-Broadway premiere of U.S.S. Frankenstein beginning September 25 at Axis Theatre. Conceived, written, and produced by Axis Company, the piece is directed by Randy Sharp featuring Axis’ signature blend of advanced technology and live performance. U.S.S. Frankenstein will be performed under an Equity Off-Broadway contract.
U.S.S. Frankenstein boldly blends fact and fantasy as it examines a mysterious and little-known military incident. In July 1945, a United States cruiser class battleship sailed to the South Pacific to deliver key components of the bomb that later detonated over Japan on August 6th. The ship also carried numerous high ranking military personnel, one of whom may have been the man responsible for the creation of the bomb itself, R. J. Oppenheimer. On the voyage back to the States, the ship was destroyed...
With U.S.S. Frankenstein, Axis Company examines not only the nature of the atomic bomb itself but also its effect on its creator, protectors, and victims. Using disparate mixed-media sources, this reconstruction of what may have been Oppenheimer’s most secret thoughts pulls a historic event into foucs.
The production stars Brian Barnhart, David Crabb, Edgar Oliver, and Christopher Swift with sets and costumes by Kate Aronsson, lighting by David Zeffrin and sound design by Steve Fontaine.
Axis Company was formed with a mission to present aggressive surrealism, classic vaudeville turns, and vanguard adaptation. Past productions include the New York Premiere of Sarah Kane’s Crave (starring Deborah Harry), Samuel Beckett’s Play, Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, Buchner’s Woyczek, and a revival of Benjamin Baker’s A Glance at New York, among numerous original works.
U.S.S. Frankenstein will be presented September 25 - November 15, Thursday - Saturday at 8:00pm. The Axis Theatre is located at One Sheridan Square (just off 7th Avenue, accessible from the 1/9 train at Sheridan Square). Tickets are $20; $10 students/seniors.
