Russ Meyer Meets Hedwig in New Rock Musical
Above and Beyond the Valley of The Ultra Showgirls
** San Francisco Cult Hit Makes NYC Debut **
Every Friday beginning January 16 at Pyramid Club Theater
"One of the most exhilarating, hysterical, outrageous shows... Expect lots of raunch -- simulated sex, crystal meth and murdered Girl Scouts. But it’s also totally tight and professional, and almost everyone who sees it drags their friends back the next week." -- San Francisco Metropolitan Magazine
"It rocks! Everything a good night of musical theater should have" -- San Francisco Bay Guardian
"It’s not surprising that the show has won over even musical theater neophytes and non-fans... a hilarious 75 or so minutes of rock ‘n’ roll cheese combined with just enough tawdry narrative" -- Bay Area Reporter
After a year-long run in San Francisco in 1998, the cult hit rock musical comedy Above and Beyond the Valley of the Ultra Showgirls makes its long-awaited New York debut. Written by D’Arcy Drollinger (Scalpel, Pink Elephants) and directed by Greg Ayers and Drollinger, the production opens Friday, January 16th at Pyramid Club Theater.
Fame, sex, gratuitous nudity, drug addiction, prostitution, live go-go girls, rock-n-roll, cat fights, murder, seduction, betrayal... and that’s just in the dressing room. Imagine Russ Meyer, Liberace and Charles Manson collaborating on a rock musical starring "Jem and the Holograms" and you have an idea of what awaits you in Above and Beyond the Valley of the Ultra Showgirls. Inspired and shamelessly plagiarized from "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" and "Showgirls", this over-the-top dark musical comedy has enough poor taste references to keep any B-movie junky erect.
The story follows SUPER VIXEN -- a struggling all-girl rock band with big dreams, big boobs, big hair and big everything else. Chablis, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer claw their way up the underside of the music industry where they meet low life record company exec Mr. Richard Face, who promises them super-stardom. When Dick talks Gewürztraminer into leaving her band mates, she changes her name to Sherry, hooks up with even trashier back up girls and becomes an overnight sensation. Naturally, her rejected friends embark on a painful and hilarious downward spiral of sex, drugs... and revenge!
The outrageous cast includes D’Arcy Drollinger, Brandon Olson, Alyssa Wendt, Chris Tanner, D’Arcy Dersham, Anne Gaynor, Jay Rhoderick, and Camille Habacker. The show features all original songs, along with a live 4-piece band -- Lance Cruce (keyboards), Silas Hoover (guitar), Mary Rodriguez (drums) and Sam McPherson (bass).
Above and Beyond the Valley of the Ultra Showgirls runs every Friday at 8:00pm beginning January 16th. Pyramid Club Theater (101 Avenue A between 6th & 7th Streets). Doors open at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $12. For information and reservations call 212-505-1700 x. 14.
