Dallas, Texas’ renowned The Undermain Theatre brings its acclaimed production of Jeffrey M. Jones A Man’s Best Friend to Walkerspace in Tribeca for its New York Premiere. Directed by Katherine Owens, the production begins performances on February 24th with press opening scheduled for Friday, February 25th.
A Man’s Best Friend is a dark and desperate comedy of bad manners that follow the adventures of Sluggo, the bad clown. He kicks his dog, he kicks his wife, he stabs his little brother from time to time for no good reason--hell, he even smells bad. In another life, he was known as Mr. Punch. This time around, he'll get a baby from Andy Warhol and do battle with the metastatic Land Squid. None of which will improve his character, or his chances for personal happiness.
Tom Lenaghen returns to his award-winning role in A Man’s Best Friend as Sluggo, while Bruce DuBose plays multiple roles as Andy Warhol, the Great Swami and Sluggo’s mother. The production features sets by Robert Winn, costumes by Happy Yancey and choreography by Sara Romersberger.
Jeffrey M. Jones is the author of numerous plays including J.P. Morgan Saves the Nation (with Rent composer Jonathan Larson), Love Trouble, 70 Scenes of Halloween, Write if You Get Work, Crazy Plays and Tomorrowland. His work has been produced in New York by Manhattan Theatre Club, Cucaracha, the Ontological, New Dramatists, En Garde Arts and more. His plays have been published by Moon Press and Broadway Play Publishing.
The Undermain Theater was founded in 1984 in the Deep Ellum section of Dallas, Texas. Undermain has produced the Dallas premieres of works by Mac Wellman, John O’Keefe, Erik Ehn, Suzan Lori-Parks, Lenora Champagne, Paul Rudnick, and Caryl Churchill. Collaboration and communication during rehearsal with many of these authors has been an integral part of their work. In 2000, the Dallas Morning News called the Undermain "our most daring and accomplished theatrical troupe." The company has also presented productions in places including Macedonia, Belgrade, Edmonton, Austin and New York.
