WET Premieres

BIG TIMES
June 11 - July 9 at Walkerspace

WET presents Mia Barron, Maggie Lacey & Danielle Skraastad in the World Premiere of BIG TIMES at Walkerspace in Soho. Both a tribute to and an exploration of the beginnings of Vaudeville, this unique new play mixes sexy dames, hilarious hijinx, song, and dance with a modern theatrical kick and a whole lot of heart. It is directed by Leigh Silverman (Second Stage’s Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, Well), developed and written by the three actresses, produced by Sasha Eden and Victoria Pettibone, and co-producer Marla Ratner. Previews begin June 11th with opening night scheduled for June 18th.

Sadie, Nellie and Lucy are three young ladies who show up in the Big City with nothing more than a mouse, a ukulele, and a dream of making it in the Big Time. Looking to stake out their place in the spotlight, they comically stumble into each other and discover that by joining forces, there’s nothing they can’t do. In true Vaudevillian style, this ragtag trio encounters more misadventures than you can shake a schtick at! The result is a magical and hilarious hybrid of a play filled with comic hijinx, bawdy babes and old New York values.

BIG TIMES features sound by Eric Shim (Orange Flower Water, recipient of 2002-2004 NEA/TCG design grant), lighting by Steve Brady, costumes by Miranda Hoffman (Well, Triple Happiness), an original score performed live by The Moonlighters, and sets by Mike Brown (Most Fabulous Story Ever Told, World of Mirth).

Leigh Silverman most recently directed Well by Lisa Kron (at both The Public Theater and at San Francisco’s ACT) and the revival of John Patrick Shanley's Danny and the Deep Blue Sea at Second Stage. Regional credits include: Jump/Cut at DC’s Woolly Mammoth Theatre, Bad Dates at Cleveland Playhouse, Wit on London’s West End and at the Geffen Theatre, and How I Learned to Drive at Actors Theatre of Louisville. She wrote and directed the GLAAD Media Award nominee Brandon Teena. Upcoming productions include Oedipus at Palm Springs at New York Theater Workshop and Jump/Cut at the Women’s Project.

Mia Barron’s New York credits include the premieres of Keith Bunin’s The World Over, David Greenspan’s She Stoops to Comedy (both at Playwrights Horizons) and Elaim Kraiem’s Sixteen Wounded (Cherry Lane). She has also appeared at The Guthrie, Wesport Playhouse, Old Globe, Long Wharf, New Jersey Shakespeare Festival, and Berkshire Theatre Festival, among others. She is the voice of Molotov on Cartoon Networks’ The Venture Brothers.

Maggie Lacey starred as Emily in the recent Broadway production of Our Town with Paul Newman and directed by James Naughton. She been seen in productions at Playwrights Horizons, The Atlantic, Theatre for A New Audience, Arena Stage, and Seattle Rep. She is set to star opposite Sam Waterston in Tom Stoppard's Travesties at the Long Wharf and in Stephen Spielberg's film War of the Worlds starring Tom Cruise this summer.

Danielle Skraastad’s credits include Desdemona in Othello (Hartford Stage), Jesus Hopped the A Train (Wilma, Barrymore nomination), Chuck Mee’s Wintertime and Big Love (Wilma), Big Love (ACT, Seattle) and Grapes of Wrath (Capital Rep). She is the Director of Summer Stage, a successful summer children’s program, a playwriting teacher at Columbia County Jail, and a professor of acting at SUNY Albany.

The Moonlighters have been making people swoon to their urban lullabies since their debut in 1998. The band features the jazz-tinged vocals of Miss Bliss Blood, who swings the band on ukulele, harmonizing with the sweet sultry voice of Carla Murray. The Village Voice once described the band as "Like something out of a 1940's sarong flick. A couple of Technicolor young ladies harmonizing sweetly and strumming along on uke and guitar, a gregarious bass player, and this quiet fellow who plays the most beautiful steel guitar you're ever likely to hear."

WET (Women’s Expressive Theater, inc) was founded in 1999 by Sasha Eden and Victoria Pettibone with a mission to produce work that challenges female stereotypes. Their most recent production was the world premiere of Julia Jordan’s St. Scarlet. Other premiere productions include Sheila Callaghan’s Scab, Rona Muro’s Bold Girls and Joyce Carol Oates’ I Stand Before You Naked II. WET also recently produced workshops of Lucy Thurber’s Bottom of the World at The Public, Tribeca Theater Festival and the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center and a reading of Adrienne Shelly’s screenplay "Waitress" starring Gretchen Mol, Paul Rudd, Amy Sedaris and Michael Cerveris.
