Wars of the Roses’ Brutal Queen Exposed
HER MAJESTY THE KING
June 10 - July 1 at HERE
Dramahaus will present the World Premiere of Sarah Overman's historical drama HER MAJESTY THE KING. Incorporating text derived from documents of the 1400’s and written in a style evoking the era, this new American play shines a spotlight on the notorious woman behind the Wars of the Roses. Produced by David R. Gerson and directed by Patrick McNulty, previews begin June 10 at HERE Arts Center with opening night scheduled for Monday, June 12th.
HER MAJESTY THE KING is a bold retelling of the bloody Wars of the Roses. Brought to England from France in 1445 as the child bride of England's feeble Henry VI, Margaret of Anjou finds herself alone in a covetous court bent on usurping her throne. How will she survive an attack on her homeland, her family and her good name? She'll fight back, of course -- and earn her reputation as England's "Brutal Queen".
The production stars Diana LaMar (Mint Theater Company's The Skin Game), Lisa McCormick (War In Paramus), Antonia Fairchild, Michael Keyloun, Mimi Cozzens (Drama-Logue, LA Weekly and ADA Award winner), Jason Kolotouros (Blue Window at MCC), Baylen Thomas (After The Fall at The Roundabout), and Justin Adams with sets by Luke Cantarella (Junie B. Jones), costumes by Katherine Hampton Noland, lighting by Joel Moritz (Julia Jordan's Tatjana in Color), original music by Josh Farrar, video by Jeremy Robins and sound by Jason Atkinson.
Playwright Sarah Overman holds an M.F.A. from the University of Minnesota/ Guthrie Theatre Professional Actor Training Program. Her original screenplay Karizma, CA was a semifinalist in the 2002 Sundance Screenwriter's Workshop. As an actor, she is the recipient of the San Francisco Critic's Circle Best Actress Award for the role of Catherine in Proof (Theatreworks) and the Back Stage Principle Performance Award.
Dramahaus was founded in 2002 by artistic director Antonia Fairchild as a global home for playwrights and directors. Their most recent production, Diary of a Chambermaid, based on the novel by Octave Mirbeau, premiered at Walkerspace in July, 2004 and made Back Stage's Best of the Year list. Possible Worlds, Dramahaus' 2002 production, won an OOBR Award. For more information visit www.dramahaus.com.
