Circus Amok Returns with
CITIZEN SHIP: AN IMMIGRANT RIGHTS FANTASIA IN 10 SHORT ACTS
FREE PERFORMANCE SERIES RUNS SEPT. 1 - 24
** Coming to a Park Near You **
Obie and Bessie Award winning CIRCUS AMOK returns for its 13th season of annual urban circuses with Citizen Ship: An Immigrant Rights Fantasia in 10 Short Acts beginning September 1st. This unusual collection of performers will offer 16 free shows in Riverside Park, Fort Greene Park, Union Square, Coney Island, Socrates Sculpture Garden, St. Mary’s Park, Red Hook, and other public spaces throughout New York. CIRCUS AMOK continually delights spectators as they juggle political satire, with traditional circus slapstick. It is completely free and open to the public -- perfect for adults and children of all ages.
CIRCUS AMOK is a one-of-a-kind, free associating, schtick driven, star-studded circus. Directed by the unstoppable "bearded lady" Jennifer Miller, this troupe of jugglers, stilt walkers, divas, and acrobats balances danger with laughter, politics with punchlines. The troupe is accompanied by the blasting, percussive sounds of the 6 piece Circus Amok band, playing a variety of international musical styles from klezmer to funk to folk.
This year, CIRCUS AMOK grapples with immigration reform in Citizen Ship: An Immigrant Rights Fantasia in 10 Short Acts. Hold on to your green cards, boys and girls! A fantastical steamer goes topsy turvy in a tsunami of confusion about citizenship. Our juggling emigrees try to out-run the INS and make it over the fence to free health care! Astounding acrobats extol the history of U.S. immigration policy asking what would happen if there were no borders?! And watch out: the Scape Goats are on the lose!
