Lifetime Achievement Obie Award Winner Mac Wellman Premieres
TWO SEPTEMBER
November 29 - December 16 at The Flea
The Flea Theater presents the New York premiere of TWO SEPTEMBER by company co-founder Mac Wellman beginning November 29th. It will be directed by Obie Award winner and Drama Desk nominee Loy Arcenas (The Romance of Magno Rubio, Warren Leight's No Foreigners Beyond This Point), who will also design the set. Opening night is slated for Tuesday, December 5th at 7pm.
TWO SEPTEMBER is the story of the war before the war. The action takes place in various locations in China and Vietnam after the Japanese coup of March 9th, 1945. It is told through the eyes of black listed writer Josephine Herbst and the young Vietnamese revolutionary leader who becomes Ho Chi Minh. As Herbst remarks, "You can't dig up a hole, and history is full of them."
The production stars Jayne Haynes (The Serpent, Terminal, and Endgame with The Open Theater) as Herbst and Arthur Acuña (The Romance of Magno Rubio, Trial By Water) as Ho, as well as Christian Baskous, Drew Hildebrand (A.R.Gurney's Screen Play) and Claro Austria. The design includes lights by Ben Stanton, costumes by Oana Botez-Ban, and sound by Leah Gelpe.
Mac Wellman’s recent plays include Bitter Bierce at PS 122 and Jennie Richee with the Ridge Theater. In 2003 he received his third Obie, for Lifetime Achievement (Antigone, Jennie Richee and Bitter Bierce all cited). His opera The Difficulty of Crossing a Field (with composer David Lang), will have its New York premiere at Montclair State this winter. In 2004 he received an award from the Foundation for Contemporary Performance Art. He is a Professor of Play Writing at Brooklyn College. Time Out recently hailed Wellman as a "titanic force on the downtown circuit".
