Korean Dance Company Makes NYC Debut
KNUA
Tuesday, December 5th
** mixed program features modern work with Balanchine & Petipa ballets **
South Korea’s KNUA (Korean National University of the Arts) Dance Company will make its New York City debut at Tribeca Performing Arts Center/BMCC on Tuesday, December 5th. Considered to be among the most talented young dancers in Korea, KNUA will present a program of classical and modern work:
Observing an ume flower
Choreographed by Hyun Ja Kim / Music by Eun Ku Kang.
The piece was inspired by unexpected reflection of an ume flower in a window, despite the harsh coldness of winter. The dance celebrates the miraculous power of nature that is able to give birth to life in spite of the cruelty and desolation of winter.
Allegro Brilliant
Choreographed by George Balanchine / Music: Peter Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 3, op. 75(1892).
This plotless and often-performed ballet relies on strong dancing, precise timing, and breadth of gesture. Balanchine expressed that it contained everything he knew about classical ballet.
Diana & Acteon Pas de deux
Choreographed by Marius Petipa / Music by Ricardo Drigo.
This excerpt from Petipa's 1886 version of La Esmeralda tells the story of Quasimodo's hopeless love for the gypsy girl Esmeralda, the machinations of an evil priest and how Quasimodo sacrifices his life to save Esmeralda.
Boulevard
Choreographed by Mina Yoo / Music by Tae Won Kang.
Not only ears can hear sounds. Dancers draw sounds on stage, turning into a musical note.
Since its inception in 1997, KNUA Dance Company has performed in Japan, China, Russia, France and the US. With the support of the Korean government’s Ministry of Culture & Tourism, KNUA School of Dance is the first dance conservatory in Korea and the first national university devoted to professional dance education. It incorporates traditional Korean heritage with all styles of dance. Students at the School of Dance have been performing and studying abroad at CNSMD de Lyon in France, which has been associated with KNUA from 2000 to 2004 as a cultural exchange program. The KNUA Dance Company Performance Group in Beijing was organized by both the School of Dance and the Beijing Dance Academy in 2002. KNUA has been awarded gold medals at the Paris International Dance Competition, the Russia Kazan Competition and the Prague International Ballet Competition; the Silver Medal at the Helshinki International Ballet Competition; and 3rd Place at the New York Competition.
