First Woman President Inspires
THINGS ARE GOING TO CHANGE, I CAN FEEL IT.
November 2 - December 2 at The Tank
Immediate Medium, one of New York's freshest and most provocative new theater companies, will present the World Premiere of THINGS ARE GOING TO CHANGE, I CAN FEEL IT. This absurd multi-media collage of performance, video, dance, and music is written by Michael Smart and directed by JJ Lind. Previews begin November 2nd at The Tank @ Collective: Unconscious with opening night slated for November 6th.
THINGS ARE GOING TO CHANGE, I CAN FEEL IT. is an absurdist tale of a Midwestern stewardess who becomes President. During her years of leadership, under the Party of the Loosened Corset, she is confronted with an invasion by Britain, an extended war, economic distress and her own failures and triumphs as a political leader. The piece is a timely examination of the continued threats to our civil liberties, the war in Iraq and on terrorism, and collective anxiety over the current leadership of our nation. With the very real possibility of our first female president, this bold new work playfully examines war, terrorism, airplane crashes, wire tapping, ineffectual presidencies, and "reality" pop culture.
THINGS ARE GOING TO CHANGE, I CAN FEEL IT. is performed by Max Dana, Brady Jenkins, Ainna Manapat, and Liz Vacco with set design by Jared Lawton, sound and video design by Robert Ramirez, choreography by Liz Vacco and costumes by Maki Takenouchi.
Michael Smart is a Los Angeles-based writer and director. His work has been shown at the Flea Theater in New York, the GTA in Berlin, and the Hinterconti in Hamburg. In 2002 Smart received a Fulbright Scholarship to Berlin during which he ran a series of live-action game shows throughout Germany. He has translated two plays, Spring's Awakening and Woyzeck, for the American stage. His video installation, dreihochvierundzwanzig, was shown at the Videonale video art festival in Germany.
Immediate Medium is a non-profit performance collaborative founded by Esteban Arboleda, Gabrielle Demeestere, J.J. Lind, Guy Penini, Michael Smart, Maki Takenouchi and Liz Vacco. The collaborators originally came together at Yale while studying mostly traditional approaches to the arts. As the members of Immediate Medium began to question the interaction between the individual and media, they developed a mission to challenge the formal and traditional distinctions between performance, dance, film, sculpture, and architecture while creating new works of experiential art. They have presented work at venues including PS 122, the Knitting Factory, the Tank, the Flea, Chashama, HERE, Nest and CSV Cultural Center. For more information visit immediatemedium.org.
