Drag Star Mimi Imfurst Returns With Controversial Look at The Virgin Mary
A VERY MARY CHRISTMAS
December 19 - 30
"A scurrilous, flippant, sacrilegious play which portrays Our Lady as a modernist woman in the vile portrayal of Mary by a perverted drag-queen... despicable, blasphemous and abominable trash." -- DailyCatholic.org
Emerging drag star MIMI IMFURST will present a newly updated version of her controversial (and sold out) 2006 show A VERY MARY CHRISTMAS. Conceived and delivered by writer/performer Mimi Imfurst and composer/lyricist/arranger Mike Pettry (winner of the 2007 Jonathan Larson and Fredrick Loewe Awards), performances begin December 19th at Don't Tell Mama.
Over 2000 years ago in the little hillside town of Bethlehem a miraculous birth occurred. You might think you know the real story, but you don't. At last, Jesus' mother sets the record straight. A VERY MARY CHRISTMAS is a musical retelling of the months leading up to the birth of Christ, as told by the Virgin Mary. With the help of her sidekicks -- the jazz trio The Three Weissmans -- Mary also shares the intimate details of her relationship with her boyfriend God, her love for her husband Joey, and her journey to stardom. A VERY MARY CHRISTMAS features parodies of holiday songs including We Need A Little Christmas, Like A Virgin and Joy To The World. Highlights include a finger puppet show and an audience sing along. Called "worst than the sin of abortion" by religious extremist organizations and hailed as "twisted" by the Catholic Advocacy Coalition, see the show that asks: Do you really know the people you pray to?
The production features Chris Dilley (best known as Trampolina from The Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel nominated dragapella quartet The Kinsey Sicks), Mike Pettry and Jeff Roberts as The Three Weissmans.
Mimi Imfurst has quickly established herself as one of NYC's most outrageous, controversial, and hysterical night life personalities. She currently is the host of Psycho Babble Mondays at Therapy, Sing-out Louise Karaoke Wednesdays and TNT Thursdays at Xes, and Heeeey! Bingo!! at OW Bar. She has been nominated for a 2007 Glammy Award and 2007 HX Drag Queen of the Year. Her controversial shows about the Virgin Mary, Mary: Like A Virgin and A Very Mary Christmas, earned her the number two spot on the Catholic Advocacy's 2006 Most Anti-Catholic People of the Year, following The DaVinci Code's Dan Brown. She has appeared in regional and New York productions of Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Hedwig), The Rocky Horror Show (Frank N Furter), and The Facts of Life: The Lost Episode (Natalie).
