REALISM AND JUMP!

Downtown theater stalwart Jean Cocteau Repertory has shed its longtime home at the Bouwerie Lane Theatre, expanded its mission, and has been rechristened THE EXCHANGE. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Ari Edelson, Board Chairman Peter Finn, and Managing Director Jennifer Sanders, this newly formed company will make its debut this spring at The Kirk Theatre at Theatre Row. The company will present two new works that were recent hits in the UK: REALISM by Anthony Neilson and JUMP!! by Lisa McGee. Both shows will be directed by Ari Edelson (The Attic).

Using highly stylized language, this Boy Meets Girl/Horatio Alger tale-gone-wild pares down playwriting to its most elemental components. In THE POD PROJECT, thirteen audience members gather together in a lounge. Individual audience members are personally ushered into a landscape of large, glowing, cylindrical pods. He or she is assigned a pod to enter and become part of a private one-on-one performance. Crossing the threshold, you may pop into: a dentist's office, a mountaintop ski-lift, a cocoon, a peep-show, a snow globe, or a bathroom with a woman in the shower. The scene content ranges from highly interactive to resolvedly voyeuristic.

The Flea commissioned this group of award winning writers to create short works using the famous holiday poem 'Twas the Night Before Christmas by Clement Clark Moore (1779 - 1863) as their inspiration. This evening of spirited riffs on the holidays will feature a new company of Bats, the resident company of emerging artists at The Flea. Jim Simpson, Artistic Director of The Flea, annually auditions close to 1000 young actors for the company which this season will feature 40 new and returning Bats.

10th Anniversary Festival runs August 11- 27
New York International Fringe Festival (FringeNYC), the largest multi-arts festival in North America, will present the 10th Anniversary Festival from August 11 - 27, 2006. This year, the festival will be the largest ever, presenting programming by 216 of the world's best emerging theatre troupes and dance companies. Shows represent 11 countries (including Poland, Australia, Trinidad and Tobago, Spain, France, Japan and Ireland) and 20 US States (including Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio, Texas, Florida, Minnesota, New Jersey and Wisconsin).

As the title suggests, CHAPTERS is episodic and features recurring characters in different time periods of their lives. This virtual play-without-words follows the emotional trajectory of two individuals as they meet, fall in love, raise a child, and endure crises. The dance explores themes of independence, fidelity, addiction, childhood, innocence, abuse, betrayal, the meaning of "coming home," and sexual taboo. It is the manner in which this universal story develops that is unique; an unfolding drama, a succession of choreographed scenes moves the storyline forward and suggests the psychological interiors of the characters. Playing with time and point of view in a cinematic fashion, the dance is filled with flashbacks, flash forwards, cross fades, and jump cuts.

Set just before the holidays, SEVEN IN ONE BLOW, OR THE BRAVE LITTLE KID tells the story of a child living in the city who kills seven flies with a single swat and makes a belt emblazoned with "SEVEN IN ONE BLOW" to commemorate the event. The Kid travels about meeting numerous colorful characters including the Scarlet Pimpernel, a Pea, December, a Witch, an Ogre and a Princess. Most people think this belt refers to seven people and assign the Kid all kinds of difficult tasks based on this faulty presumption. Along the way a few invaluable lessons are learned: an Ogre finds that you don't always have to show how strong you are... sometimes it's okay just to be quiet about it; a girl realizes that when you tease people you are hurting someone who may be just like you; and a scary monster understands that because she is loved, she may not be so scary after all. In the end, the Kid ultimately discovers that a parent’s love and care has no limits.

Immediately following the fifth annual d.u.m.b.o. dance festival, WHITE WAVE will launch the first annual International DUMBO Dance Festival, October 19-23, 2005. The goal of this festival is to showcase the works of emerging contemporary dance choreographers of a single ethnic or cultural heritage. HOLLY WOODLAWN was part of the Andy Warhol Factory scene in the 1960's and 1970's, the wildly creative underground downtown Manhattan scene that created visual art, films, music, and performance. Along with fellow Warhol Superstars and associates like Lou Reed, Edie Sedgwick, Sylvia Miles, Viva, Penny Arcade, and Candy Darling, Holly appeared in projects regularly and the gossip columns constantly. Her leading role in the film "Andy Warhol's Trash," directed by Paul Morrissey and co-starring the iconic Joe Dallesandro, catapulted her to international stardom.

THE AUDITION

At each night of THE AUDITION, ten actors (found in local ads and by word-of-mouth) and one lucky person chosen from the audience will perform their prepared monologue for panel of three entertainment industry professionals (directors, producers, and casting directors) and the audience. After all of the initial auditions are complete, the audience votes for their favorite performers. The six top-ranking actors return for Act II to claim their prize: the highly-coveted callback. The night then culminates in cold readings and performances of specially created scenes.
